The UCB-HES protocol is designed for routine processing of umbilical cord blood (UCB) to concentrate the nucleated cells fraction that is rich in hematopoietic stem cells. In this protocol, Hydroxyethyl Starch (HES) is added to the umbilical cord blood prior to beginning the procedure to assist in the sedimentation of red blood cells.
The UCB-HES protocol allows a volume reduction of umbilical cord blood in approximately 35 min to a predetermined fixed volume ranging from 20 to 50 ml.
This separation protocol is ideally suited to cord blood banking where space and storage costs are a concern.
- Initial volume 35-320 ml
- Consistent TNC recovery above 85 % in routine
- Consistent CD34+ viability above 95%
